Elon Musk’s association with OpenAI is widely recognized. Musk, who has openly discussed OpenAI’s transition from a non-profit to a for-profit entity following Microsoft’s substantial investment, has recently introduced xAI’s chatbot Grok to compete with ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. This time, it was OpenAI’s Sam Altman who took a swipe at the new contender.
The owner of X has positioned Grok as a chatbot with a rebellious and humorous character. His company claims that Grok “will also respond to daring questions rejected by many other AI systems.” This characteristic seemingly provided an opening for Altman to critique Grok while simultaneously endorsing OpenAI’s recently unveiled GPTs.
What are GPTs
GPTs, akin to ChatGPT, are chatbot models that developers can employ to build purpose-specific chatbots. Altman shared a screenshot on X where he instructed the GPT Builder to “function as a chatbot responding to questions with cringey boomer humor, delivering awkward shocks for laughs.
The GPT Builder responds with, “Excellent, the chatbot is ready! Its name is Grok. How do you feel about the name, or would you prefer something else?” Altman then remarked, “GPTs can save a lot of effort,” seemingly suggesting that Musk could have utilized the GPT builder to create a chatbot instead of investing time and resources in a separate venture.
This swiftly transformed into a meme celebration. While one user quipped, “Sam woke up today and chose violence,” another shared a picture of a displeased Musk, captioning it with “sir, it appears we have been outmemed.
Altman’s post followed shortly after a Twitter user posted screenshots of Grok’s response to a query: “I inquired from Grok about their potential success in a cage fight against ChatGPT.” The user requested the chatbot to be explicit. The tweet grabbed Musk’s attention, and he responded with “fire” and “laughing” emojis.
