Over 100,000 incidents in the United States reported on Downdetector.com
Meta’s Instagram restored services for the majority of users following a resolved technical problem, according to the company’s statement on Sunday. A spokesperson from Meta informed Reuters, “Earlier today, a technical issue caused some people to have trouble accessing Instagram. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted.” The company did not disclose the precise number of affected users. However, Downdetector.com, an outage tracking website, recorded over 100,000 incidents in the United States, 24,000 in Canada, and more than 56,000 in Britain.
At its peak, over 180,000 users experienced difficulties accessing Instagram. According to Downdetector.com, Instagram faced service disruption for certain users starting from approximately 5:45 p.m. EST (2145 GMT) on Sunday. The number of reported outages gradually decreased to slightly over 7,000 by 8:30 p.m. EST.
Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing sources familiar with the matter, that Instagram is preparing to launch a text-based application to rival Twitter. The report suggests that the app could potentially be introduced as early as June. Facebook, the parent company of Instagram, is currently conducting tests of the product with influencers and selected creators.
According to a newsletter by Alex Heath, Meta has been reaching out to talent agencies and celebrities to assess their interest in testing an initial iteration of the app, which will be integrated with Instagram. The report further states that Meta, the parent company, has covertly provided the new app to a few chosen creators for several months. Although it is distinct from Instagram, the app is expected to enable users to link their accounts.
