Several weeks after the US prohibited Nvidia from selling two high-end AI chips and a leading gaming chip to Chinese companies, reports have surfaced
Nvidia is reportedly set to unveil three new chips for the Chinese market, a few weeks after the US prevented the company from selling two high-end artificial intelligence (AI) chips and a flagship gaming chip to Chinese firms.
According to local media reports, Nvidia may announce the HGX H20, L20 PCIe, and L2 PCIe chips around November 16, as mentioned by sources familiar with the matter to Star Market Daily.
When approached for comment on the report, Nvidia declined. In the preceding month, the US-based AI chip giant stated that new export restrictions imposed by Washington would impede the sale of two modified advanced AI chips—the A800 and H800—both designed for the Chinese market last year to comply with previous export regulations.
The company stated that the restrictions would impact its high-end gaming chip, the L40S chip, announced in August.
On October 24, Nvidia announced the immediate enforcement of these restrictions, as US regulators had accelerated the original deadline.
Nvidia currently dominates over 90% of China’s $7 billion AI chip market. Analysts predict that the US restrictions could open doors for domestic companies like Huawei Technologies to gain traction. Sources revealed that the Chinese internet giant Baidu had placed a substantial order for Huawei AI chips earlier this year, anticipating future difficulties in procuring from Nvidia due to the impending US curbs.
During pre-market trading in New York, Nvidia’s shares saw a 1.8% increase.
