For those with numerous connected smart devices at home, managing them typically involves scrolling through lists. Samsung notes that the average US home has 16 connected devices, with an expected increase. As device numbers grow, tracking setups will become more challenging for users.
Samsung introduces an innovative solution to replace mundane lists. The South Korean tech giant revealed the Map View feature for SmartThings at the CES 2024 tech industry event. This feature is poised to revolutionize the management of connected smart home devices for SmartThings users. The SmartThings 3D Map View feature is scheduled for release in March.
The SmartThings 3D Map View places connected smart devices on detailed 3D floor plans that accurately represent the user’s home. Users of SmartThings can utilize Map View on their smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs, enabling them to control connected smart home devices and access information instantly.
Users have the ability to navigate the Map View, exercising control over smart devices for real-time monitoring of cameras, laundry schedules, temperatures, and other vital data. This feature will also provide energy usage information from a comprehensive, bird’s-eye perspective.
This functionality not only enhances the smart home management experience but also grants users the ability to personalize their 3D maps by adding furniture and AI characters. SmartThings users can utilize the 3D Map to generate AI characters resembling their family members and pets. These characters can offer additional feedback, such as visibly sweating if the outside temperature is high and the home is too warm.
Samsung has verified that “using AI technology, anyone can effortlessly generate a 3D layout of their home in Map View.” Specifically, users can input their address to automatically create a layout. However, the capability to create a 3D Map is contingent on homes having their floor plans accessible on the internet.
In addition, users have the option to capture a photo of a physical or image-based floor plan. SmartThings will seamlessly convert it into a 3D layout. Furthermore, smart home devices featuring LiDAR technology can scan the home and produce floor plans for users.
