A year ago, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, an all-encompassing chatbot, to the public. Now, leveraging the capabilities of GPTs, the creators of ChatGPT are empowering individuals to build their own AI chatbots.
During the keynote presentation at OpenAI’s inaugural developer conference, DevDay 2023, the company revealed the latest iteration of the AI chatbot, ChatGPT-4 Turbo. Alongside various other announcements, OpenAI introduced a novel approach to democratize generative AI technology, enabling individuals to create their personalized ChatGPT chatbots without requiring any coding skills—the GPTs.
What are GPTs, and what can they do
GPTs, customized versions of ChatGPT designed for specific purposes, can be created without the need for coding expertise. Generating a GPT involves a straightforward process of conversing with ChatGPT and articulating the desired functionalities.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, emphasizes that programming a GPT involves conversational interactions. This accessibility empowers everyone to create GPTs tailored to their needs. During an on-stage demonstration, Altman illustrated the process by engaging with ChatGPT to create a new GPT draft, specifying the intention of developing a bot that offers advice to founders on improving their startups. He then uploaded a lecture on the topic, requested a concise and constructive summary, and deemed the GPT ready for use.
Users will have the option to integrate external services, such as utilizing a translation API for unsupported languages. However, users will have control over whether their data is processed in this manner.
These GPTs will be accessible to both regular users, requiring the $20 subscription fee for ChatGPT Plus, and enterprise accounts. Enterprise users can develop exclusive, admin-approved mini-chatbots for internal use. These chatbots will undergo training on the company’s distinct tasks, department documentation, or proprietary datasets. Enterprise GPTs will be accessible to these users starting Wednesday.
Testing for GPTs will be available soon.
An app store for AI chatbots
GPTs generated by users will be immediately shareable, allowing direct sharing among users. OpenAI has outlined its intention to introduce a centralized storefront later this month, where ‘verified builders’ can publish and exchange their GPTs.
To ensure adherence to the company’s usage policies, OpenAI is implementing additional technical measures in conjunction with existing moderation systems. Furthermore, an identity verification system for developers is being introduced to enhance transparency and trust.
The most widely adopted GPTs will ascend a leaderboard, potentially earning their creators compensation based on user utilization.
